DURANGO, COLORADO: MESA VERDE

Remember the pictures go from the end of the day to the beginning so this first picture is of after our LONG day at Mesa Verde - the kids with their junior ranger badges. This was one of my favorite things that we did. I love national parks but this one is unique in the fact that it also preserves the history of a people. They used to live on the cliff side and would farm the land on the top of the mesa. It was fascinating to see the way they lived. We were able to get tickets to walk thru one of the cliff houses, Balcony House. To be able to go through it, children have to be able to do it all on their own. Especially the vertical later to get into it. Brooke and Todd's kids were just a little too young, so after we had gone through everything and were ready to head to the Balcony House, they headed back to Durango. Lily who had a bunch of 1 inch sized mosquito bites that were being seriously aggravated but the heat decided to go with them. I felt bad that she was so miserable and was very grateful that her aunt and uncle were willing to take her back with them. It also created enough open seats in our vehicle that all the other adults were all able to stay and go thru the cliff house as well. We will have to visit again so Lily can walk thru them too! Because despite the fact that I'm terrified of heights, walking thru the Balcony House was quite a neat experience.
Crystal got her junior ranger badge earlier in the day. Jay and Lily weren't done yet so they hadn't gotten theirs. On our way out we stopped at a ranger station. Since Lily went home early, Crystal stood in as Lily so she could get her badge as well. We have 3 junior rangers now.
When we got into Durango, we met Todd and Brooke at a restaurant in town and had dinner. We had a good time visiting and of course played some games once the kids were in bed. I think everyone slept well that night!
